Vlaar, who has thus far donned the jersey of the Oranje in 9 matches, was extremely disappointed with his side bowing out of the competition, and revealed that everyone should take a good look at their own performances.
“I think we all need to take a good look at ourselves to see what went wrong, and to at least realise that this cannot happen again. But it did happen, so let this be a hard lesson”, Vlaar was quoted as saying to the official UEFA
website.
The 27-year-old went on to apologise all the Oranje fans following a poor European Championship campaign, and insisted that nobody was expecting such performances from the 2010 World Cup silver-medallist.
“What can I say to the fans? Sorry that it didn't end up the way you expected, but it wasn't the way we expected either. That's very painful, but there's nothing we can do about it anymore and that's just the way it is”, Vlaar
added.
The highly-talented centre-back also insisted that the Oranje had a good quality squad, but they failed to perform in this competition.
“One thing is clear: there's enough quality within the squad, it just wasn't shown during this tournament”, Vlaar concluded.
