Ron Washington leaves out Koji Uehara and Yoshinori Tateyama for the World Series squad
Two regular figures from the postseason were absent from the Texas Rangers dugout on Wednesday, October 19, when the club took on the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series, at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The club had to drop two relievers
to bring in relief pitcher Mark Lowe and catcher Matt Treanor. Texas manager Ron Washington claimed the decision to be a difficult one as the two departing relievers were prominent during the season.
Yoshinori Tateyama carried an earning runs average of 4.50 over his 39 games in the regular season. In 44 innings, he conceded 37 hits and 23 runs. During the postseason, he featured for the Rangers, only once. He pitched in the Championship Series, conceding
one hit of 0.2 innings.
Koji Uehara, on the other hand, was another top figure in the mix. He was 2 – 3 in the season, with an earning runs average of 2.35 from 65 innings in the year. Playing for bother the Baltimore Orioles and the Rangers, Uehara was consistent. Nevertheless,
in the postseason, he was not. He featured in three games and conceded five runs, which included three homers. His earning runs average is 33.75.
The two had to be replaced with Matt Treanor, who will be the second choice catcher behind Yorvit Torrealba, and Mark Lowe, who has done well in the live batting practice after returning from hamstring injury.
"The second time he threw live batting practice, the ball was coming out of his hand well and he was executing well," Washington said. "He's ready to go. We didn't use Tateyama a whole lot in the second round. That's why he's being replaced. Mark is ready.
In Uehara's case, he has been struggling, and we had to get Matt on. It was two tough conversations we had with those guys because at some point this year, both guys provided a lot for us."
The Rangers lost Game 1 by a 3 – 2 score line but they are hoping to rise up again in the next game. Ron Washington will be hoping for his club players to do well in the following games.
