Ron Washington looks back at C. J. Wilson and controversy concerning Adrian Beltre in Game 1
Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington may have been disappointed over his club’s recent 3 – 2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Wednesday, October 19, but he was more than willing to talk about
the encounter after the game had ended. The skipper made note of C. J. Wilson’s contribution from the mound and he was willing to talk about the controversy that surrounded the club in the ninth inning of the game.
The ninth inning incident came off the bat of Adrian Beltre as the slugger smashed the ball on his foot. The ball was collected on third base and Beltre was called out. Nevertheless, the player made his opinion known and that did not sit well with the crowd
that assumed the hitter was cheating.
The umpiring crew withheld the call after debating whether the ball had struck the slugger on the foot or not. Washington was queried by the reporters on whether Beltre actually connected the ball with his foot. He made a cautious reply.
"Well, he said he did," Washington said, "and he had on those Velcro-type shoes, so he asked [the umpires] to check the ball. They couldn't find anything on it. He said none of the umpires recognized it, so that's what it was about."
C. J. Wilson took the opportunity to make his presence known on the mound for the fourth time in the postseason, this year, but it made no difference to his string of losses as the hurler picked up his third loss of the playoffs. He lasted 5 2/3 innings,
conceding the three runs off four hits in 94 pitches. Washington talked about him lightly.
"I thought C.J. did a good job tonight," Washington said. "Yep, he may have walked some guys and he hit Albert, but he was in a 2-2 ballgame and he was battling Carpenter. As far as I was concerned, it was a pretty good ballgame, and C.J. did his job."
With the Rangers 1 – 0 down, Washington will be pushing Colby Lewis to the mound for Game 2.
