Ron Washington managing the American League team in an All Star game - MLB News
Ron Washington displayed some high quality management skills last season to help Texas Rangers reach the World Series championship. The former Major League baseball shortstop has previously coached New York Mets and Oakland Athletics. The manager has the ability to get the best out of his players to achieve his goals. He will be hoping to lead the American League team to a memorable win in the All Star game.
"I’m looking forward to managing that game again," Washington said. "I'd like another shot at beating the NL team. Hopefully, we can come away with a win this time."
"Tony earned this opportunity with the remarkable run, I am delighted he shared my enthusiasm about his staying in this role,'' Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.
Tony La Russa will be managing the other team in an anticipated encounter. Although La Russa retired from his coaching career after leading the Cardinals to World Series win, All Star game organisers and commissioners requested him to come out of retirement for one day to perform the management duties. La Russa will be the only second retired manager to manage an all start game since John McGraw did it in 1933. Considering his sensational career stats, La Russa is one of the best managers in history of the game.
"He deserved to be the manager of the All-Star Game. He won the World Series," Washington said Tuesday. "It's nice that baseball reached out to him to make sure he had the opportunity to do that and I'm glad Tony accepted."
Although the Rangers lost the seven match series to St. Louis Cardinals, Washington became a very popular face among Ranger's fans. With Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder in the American League team's battling line-up, Washington's team will be the favourites to emerge victorious. However, considering La Russa's experience and managerial abilities, the National League team could post an upset.
