Ron Washington talks lightly about Colby Lewis as Texas Rangers lose 4-6 to Toronto Blue Jays
Things could not have gone better for the Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking to chase the New York Yankees in the American League East. They won their opening game in the series against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
For the Texans the situation was different. They were looking to retain their lead and extend it further in the American League West division. However, a fifth inning six-run concession got them out of the game.
Manager Ron Washington talked about the encounter and he was light on his starting pitcher, who lost the club six runs in just one inning. The Rangers tried to get back in the game but they were unable to get to six runs in the nine allotted innings. Their
pitcher, Colby Lewis, had been impressive in the first four innings as he allowed no runs.
His fifth inning deliveries did not produce the desired effect Washington wanted out of the encounter. The skipper’s premier ball thrower conceded seven hits and four walks in five innings.
"I thought he was real good", manager Ron Washington said. "Things happened early and he was able to pitch around it. In the fifth inning things just became unravelled. If he can continue to do what he did in the first four innings, things will be all right.
One thing about baseball ... it will challenge you. He's challenged. We're challenged. He's going to get through this. He's healthy. We're going to keep giving him the ball. He'll figure it out".
The Rangers tried to fight their way back through their hitters but the damage was too big to repair.
"We had our opportunities", Washington said. "Sometimes you can come back. Tonight, we couldn't".
Michael Young smashed two doubles and one of those shots brought in a run, while Ian Kinsler also drove in a run on a double. Yorvit Torrealba and Nelson Cruz smashed home runs as well but their efforts met no merit as the team eventually sunk down to a
4–6 defeat.
