Ron the Greek landed his second stakes win in a row when he won the Queens County for owner Adam Wachtel
It was, Ron the Greek, through and through in the Queens County as he dictated the pace and drew clear of the field in the stretch to take the 106th running of the $65,000 Queens County at Aqueduct race course on 10 December, 2011, for owner Adam
Wachtel.
Adam Wachtel who owns the Wachtel Stable wanted to buy Ron the Greek for over than a year, and the 4-year-old colt and the 2010 Kentucky Derby prospect took the Queens County to prove his shrewd buy.
He bought Ron the Greek in July and since then the Florida bred son of Full Mandate, out of mare Flambe’ by Fortunate Prospect, Ron the Greek first conquered the Sunny and Mild Stakes field on 17 November, 2011, when he downed Bigger is Bettor in second
and Most Happy Fella in third, while he topped the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute and 51.83 seconds.
Now, Ron the Greek proved himself and the buy yet again when he recorded his second consecutive stakes victory after rolling in front to down Inherit the Gold by 2 ¼ lengths.
Ron the Greek picked up his fifth win in fifteen starts altogether, and in a race which lacked pace, jockey Junior Alvarado took him out to set modest fractions of 24.30 seconds for the opening quarter mile, 49.35 seconds for half mile and topped six furlongs
in 1 minute and 14.17 seconds.
Fonda Ronda Won was in hot pursuit of Ron the Greek, and Inherit the Gold took the wider option and did the same. Inherit the Gold then came close, enough to prompt Alvarado to get Ron the Greek under a strong drive and take him out of sight.
The 4-year-old colt responded and went with the drive to cover the marathon distance of 1 3/16 miles in 1 minute and 56.84 seconds.
Before buying Ron the Greek, he was winless in nine starts, but even then he ran a couple of solid races which proved the fact that Adam Wachtel saw some potential in the colt.
"He basically said I think he just needs a change," Wachtel recalled Hammer telling him. "Maybe if you bring him over to Bill Mott we can straighten him out."
