Ronald Koeman rules out Middlesbrough job
Former AZ Alkmaar coach Ronald Koeman has distanced himself from the vacant Middlesbrough managerial job after he was linked to taking over the role.
Koeman is keen to return to management having left AZ Alkmaar in December 2009. The former Holland international served as the Dutch side’s manager for seven months.
Koeman hinted that he would only be willing to take over a club that were able to compete in the Premier league or that had the potential to do so.
"I would love to work in England, preferably at the highest level or at a club with potential. I do not see that at Middlesbrough," said Koeman.
The former AZ Alkmaar coach has also managed Dutch rivals PSV Eindhoven and Portuguese giants Benfica.
Middlesbrough are now searching for a new manager after they parted ways with Gordon Strachan earlier this week.
The club were tipped to be the favourites for promotion this season, but Koeman has suggested that Middlesbrough do not have the players or the resources to return to the Premier League and challenge in the future.
The Championship side have had a disastrous start to the season under Strachan and despite the Scots departure their losing streak continued against Nottingham Forest as they were defeated 1-0 away at the City Ground.
Middlesbrough are only one place above the relegation zone and have managed to pick up just 11 points in 12 games so far this season.
A number of their top players have struggled with form and many of Strachan’s signings have failed to live up to their price tags and reputations.
The club may find it difficult to attract a top quality manager after their poor showing in the league campaign so far.
Koeman has already cooled his interest in taking over at Middlesbrough after it was rumoured that the board had made the Dutchman their number one target.
