Ronaldo: Hercules has proved that Barcelona is beatable
Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro today said that Barcelona is not the unstoppable force that many believe them to be — with the Hercules shocking win over the two-time defending La Liga champions proving as much.
Hercules stunned the Catalan giants on Saturday when they picked up all three points in their Primera Division at Camp Nou through two goals from Nelson Valdez. That result has given the rest of the league the belief that they can compete with Barcelona.
Ronaldo, who joined Madrid last summer for a world-record fee of £80m from Manchester United, told reporters at a press conference today that Hercules’ win was ‘surprising’ but welcome, as Madrid aims to end Barcelona’s dominance of the league.
He said that, “There are no unbeatable teams, but I was happy and surprised [at Barcelona’s defeat]. For us, we tried to play well, and to put on a show, but sometimes it is not possible. It is better if the public help you to play better. The energy spent on whistling is the same as what they can use to encourage us.”
Madrid is back to their winning ways, defeating Osasuna 1-0 after a goalless draw against Mallorca in the opening match of the campaign. Ronaldo added that, with new head coach Jose Mourinho in charge, he believes that his team will pick up momentum quickly and return to winning after failing to pick up any silverware last season.
He said that, “Our goal was to win. I’m sure Mourinho will end up giving us a show. He is one of the best coaches in the world. We are a team under construction, and we want to win a title this year. Real Madrid is a club that cannot afford to spend two seasons without winning anything, and neither can I.”
