Ronaldo backs Madrid for Champions League glory
Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken of his side’s “ambition to win the Champions League.” The Spanish giants have suffered early exits from Europe’s elite competition in the last few seasons, but now with Jose Mourinho at the helm, Ronaldo is predicting a stronger challenge from the Bernabeu club.
The former Manchester United winger claimed: “We have all the necessary ingredients to win the competition, but we have to take one step at a time.” Few would disagree that the squad at Mourinho’s disposal is capable of toppling the best sides in Europe, but the club have floundered on the big stage far too often in recent years. However, Ronaldo is quick to point out the effect new boss Mourinho will have on the side: “Mourinho is the best coach in the world and I'm sure we will win,” he stated.
Mourinho’s pedigree in the competition is nothing short of phenomenal, as he not only boasts two triumphs with first Porto and then Inter Milan last season, but he ventured into the semi-finals on countless occasions with Chelsea, only to be denied in dramatic and uncertain circumstances on more than one occasion. Now the Portuguese coach has a massively talented squad at his disposal, with Ronaldo heading a list that includes Kaka, Gonzalo Higuain, Xabi Alonso, and new imports Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria to name just a few. It’s unarguably a better squad than the ones he triumphed with at both Porto and Inter, so Ronaldo’s confidence may not be too far wide of the mark. But putting those words into action is a different thing, and with such a talented squad, comes huge pressure, so the Madrid stars will have plenty to cope with. Add that to the strength of the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea, and we are surely in for a thrilling campaign.
