The Portuguese skipper wasn’t given a chance to take a penalty against Spain in the Euro 2012, and believes that penalties require luck rather than skill.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629, despite being the brilliant player that he is, is famous for his penalty misses while being under pressure.
From the penalty miss against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-c9622 has always come under the fire whenever it comes down to handling pressure situations.
Recently Ronaldo was discussed amongst the football purists when he didn’t get a chance to take a penalty against Spain during the Euro 2012 semi-final.
The Portuguese skipper started the Euro 2012 campaign slowly for his national side. He was unable to impress during his first game, but then eventually managed to help Portugal qualify for the semi-final stage of the competition.
Portugal were drawn into the toughest group of the competition, with teams like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Denmark-c2884 in their group. However, Ronaldo was able to impress in the group stages, and fired his side into the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
Portugal faced http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Czech-Republic-c2882 in the quarter-final stage of the tournament and it was Ronaldo who helped his side qualify for the semi-final after he scored from a header.
Spain were Portugal’s opponents in the semi-final stage and as the match ended in a draw, it had to be decided on penalties.
Ronaldo decided to take the last penalty, but Spain won the game before that, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 missed only one.
While speaking about penalty shootouts, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ronaldo-c31734 recently claimed that it is more about luck rather than skill and said:
"It was very hard what I went through last season. First, with Madrid against Bayern, and then with Portugal at the Euros. With Real Madrid, in the semi-finals of the Champions League, I took the first and missed; against Spain I decided to take the last
one, but could not.”
"For me, penalties ultimately come down to luck. So for me I'd say that it was very unfortunate to have so much bad luck in such a short space of time, and at crucial moments.”
"Everyone will have their own ideas of whether to take the first, the second, or the last, but in the end it is a bit of a lottery."
Ronaldo is currently on a pre-season tour with Real Madrid and will be helping Los Blancos start their Spanish La Liga campaign next month. The newly crowned Spanish champions will be defending their domestic title and they are favourites to win a European
double in the coming season.
Real Madrid’s first opponents are going to be http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863.
