Christiano Ronaldo has found himself at the centre of another controversy. The player was at the centre of the biggest transfer sagas ever known to football. The drama between two powerhouse clubs continued for more than a year. At the start of 2008/09 seasons, it was believed that the winger was sure to make the switch. However, he was persuaded by his Manager Sir Alex Ferguson to stay on. However, there was a suggestion that there will be a back-end deal between the two clubs. After the end of the 2009 season, this is exactly how it panned out.
Ronaldo’s move to Bernabeu for 80 million pounds was an important transfer in club football. The player later said that Real Madrid was his dream destination since ages. Before moving to Real, Ronaldo led Manchester United to their third consecutive title in the English Premier League. The Portuguese captain had played a major role in the previous trophy winning seasons for United.
Ronaldo’s time in Madrid started in spectacular fashion. He looked to have carried his goal scoring form from Manchester to Madrid in his bag. Apart from him, there were a number of big name signings that were made by the club. The Spanish giants spent the big bucks during the 2009 season by bringing players like Kaka, Karim Benzima, Van Der Vart, and Xavi Aloso to the club. And the expectations were high not just domestically but also in Europe. President Florintino Perez had promised that the money spent would bring the trophies back to the club.
However, as the season came progressed, Real Madrid was knocked out of the last 16. The team is also out of domestic cup competition and is trailing their archrivals Barcelona by one point. But Ronaldo insists that he is satisfied with his first season in Spain, regardless of not getting any silverware.
The 25-year-old scored 26 goals in his first season with Madrid with 28 league appearances, including a hat trick. Regardless of whether Madrid wins the title or not, Ronaldo insists he is content with his performance.
He said, “I really enjoyed the season that I've done, but what's missing is winning a title,”
"I'm very happy here in Madrid and my team-mates have helped me a lot, but the team has not won anything.
"We have to keep fighting and I am confident we will win many titles (in future}”
While commenting on the final day of the Spanish la liga, Ronaldo said that even though it is difficult, anything could happen in a game of football.
But the biggest disappointment for the former Manchester United man has been the premature exit from Champion’s League. He believes that his team lacked coordination, as many players were new to the club. He believed that as time passed by, the same bunch off players would be winning many trophies for the club. Reflecting on his first 2 years at Manchester United, he said that the first 2 seasons at old Trafford were winless for the team. However, the performances in the latter part of his stay there for everyone to see. He is certain that he can inspire his new team, to go on and rule not only Spain but the whole of Europe as well.
