Rong Wang, Zhibo Zhang clutch Women’s Doubles trophy in 2012 Bitburger Badminton Open
It was an unexpected ending of Women’s Doubles event in Bitburger Badminton Open Grand Prix Gold as an unseeded team Rong Wang-Zhibo Zhang locked the honour on Sunday, November 4, 2012.
They overpowered Johanna Goliszewski-Birgit Michels in the final round by registering a straight-set victory with an impressive result of 21-15 and 21-13.
This title match was staged at local badminton arena of Saarbrucken, Germany and it kept the audience intact for 31 minutes.
The local crowd was expecting the native shuttlers Johanna and Birgit to claim top spot on the victory stand in this GP Gold tournament.
However, it was sheer disappointment for them as the German campaigners put up a below par performance and surrendered in a shameful manner.
Though, Johanna and Birgit took off in perfectly but they lacked good finishing skills which ultimately led them to a woeful exit.
In the opening game, they established an early lead with 6-4 and then doubled the impact by putting a convincing margin of 11-6 before the interval.
Later part of the game saw them making some back-to-back mistakes and squandering their initial advantage.
Rong and Zhibo, who belong to Macau, did not miss this opportunity and made best out of their rival’s blunders.
At first, they levelled the score at 13-13 and then made a notable difference by gathering valuable points at steady pace.
They maintained the upper hand all the way to the game point situation and swept the table with 21-15 total.
The following game proved a one-sided affair as Rong-Zhibo did not give their higher ranked competitors even a single counter-attack opportunity.
They manipulated every loop-hole and finished this crucial game with a significant lead of eight points.
In the first half of the set, the Macau girls made swift progress to a respectable score position of 8-3 and magnified the impact with an indomitable figure of 14-5.
The twosome of Johanna and Birgit strived hard to narrow the gap but they kept trailing behind their challengers until last shot was played.
Finally, they had to give up this futile chase when Rong-Zhibo piled up a winning margin of 21-13.
