Ronnie O’Sullivan clinches 2012 German Masters title after trashing Stephen Maguire at Tempodrom
The Rocket put up a marvellous snooker display at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin to claim his first major ranking title since 2009. O’Sullivan defeated the former UK Championship winner, Scotland’s Stephen Maguire in the final of the 2012 German Masters by
the score line of 9-7 after a tussling encounter.
The former three-time World Snooker Champion showed superb resilience throughout the tournament. He was outstanding at the baize after he barely escaped defeat in the first round against compatriot Andrew Higginson. The final encounter brought the same situation
for the Wordsley potter as he was 3-6 down to the Scotsman, but he made a superb comeback to hit the winning spot.
O'Sullivan started his campaign at the 2012 German Masters with a sparking comeback and he finished it in same fashion. He reached the final clash against Stephen Maguire after ousting Andrew Higginson in Round 1, Joe Perry in Round 2, Matthew Stevens in
the quarter-final and compatriot Stephen Lee in the semi-finals.
O’Sullivan started off the final encounter with a super 111 break in reply to Maguire’s 26 points and grabbed a 1-0 lead. After tumbling one frame down, the Scotsman cruised into a three frame lead after clinching four consecutive frames. Maggi pocketed
impressive knocks of 130, 106 and 128 to get back into the game with a 1-4 score line.
O’Sullivan moved one frame up at 2-4 after winning the sixth frame. At the end of ninth frame, just before the interval, O’Sullivan was trailing Maguire with three frames at 3-6. The 36-year-old O’Sullivan was under immense pressure but the former champ
did not lose his focus and sprang back into the game with his own playing style.
He sparked his cue stick all over the table with five straight frames by scores of 96-40, 78-0, 68-59, 94-37 and 75-31 after mustering cracking clearances of 96, 54 and 67 to overawe Maguire and surge into a two frame lead at 8-6. Nerves began to affect
the On-Fire Maguire as he tried to settle things down with a 15th frame win by 43-75, but his safety-punctuated move was not enough to turn the tables.
After an easy win in the 16th frame by the score line of 66-41, O’Sullivan claimed the 2012 German Masters and shook hands with Michaela Tabb, the referee of the final match.
