Ronnie O’Sullivan edges out Andrew Higginson in Round 1: 2012 German Masters
England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan faced a tough resistance from compatriot Andrew Higginson and was at the brink of losing his first-round match but in the very last moments, he sprang back into the game and cleared the table to win his opening match by the score
line of 5-4. Despite having immense experience at the baize, the Wordsley potter’s skills were put into test by Cheshire’s Higginson.
Higginson, on the other hand, showed a great deal of determination troubling the Rocket during the contest but he was not able to hit the jackpot and tumbled down by one frame. The 34-year-old dragged the game into a tussling situation where the former three-time
World Snooker Champion was under the immense pressure of an upset defeat.
However, a superb comeback from the Magician brought him into a position where he enabled himself to claim the final victory. The 36-year-old made one of the best comebacks of his career during the dramatic Round 1 contest of the 2012 German Masters at the
Tempodrom arena in Berlin, Germany. The Essex Exocet was trailing 4-0 at the time of interval but jumped back into the game to win 5-4.
Speaking to the World Snooker in his post match interview, O’Sullivan said, “Andrew played well and I was lucky to win. At 4-0 down I hadn't done a lot wrong. It was a great atmosphere and I enjoyed the comeback. I don't want to comment on the rankings,
it would just be nice to win a tournament.”
Higginson grabbed an early 0-4 lead after smashing a couple of outstanding knocks of 67 and 80 points. Higginson was leading the fifth frame by 46-12 but missed an easy green to let the Essex potter come at the table. O’Sullivan took advantage of the situation
and cleared the table in no time followed by four consecutive frame wins.
Chigwell's O'Sullivan will next meet compatriot Joe Perry in the second round. Perry defeated former World Snooker Championship runner up, Ali Carter by the score line of 5-4 in the first round of 2012 German Masters.
