Ronnie O’Sullivan gives new ideas to WPBSA for new season calendar – Snooker News
Tussle between the four-time World Snooker Champion from England, Ronnie O’Sullivan and the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) has entered into a new phase. The reigning World Snooker Champion is giving new
ideas to the association so that they can make new changes in the snooker calendar.
While speaking to the local media about his ideas, O’Sullivan said, “Stephen Hendry retired for similar reasons, a year down the line who knows who might be up for it. People switch on the TV to watch certain players. They know the characters, know the person,
are excited by what they do and waiting for something to happen.”
He added, “I believe there is another way, and I can open a door for other players. They could be fantastic, proper tournaments. Only eight players would have the status that bring something to that, that the public would pay to see, that I would pay to
see.”
The Englishman has been suggesting the association some new ideas to test in the new season. Recently he suggested that the WPBSA should follow the Wild Card structure of tennis or golf and wanted to enter the 2012 Shanghai Masters snooker tournament. O’Sullivan
refused to sign the contract of the new season with World Snooker because he did not want to participate in all snooker tournament of the season.
The WPBSA responded to the Rocket saying that the game has its own set of rules and as far as the Wild Card entry is concerned, that is totally depends upon the host country, WPBSA and the promoters of the certain tournament. Nevertheless, the association
also allowed the players that they can take part in any snooker event but before that signing the contract is necessary.
However, O’Sullivan believes that many other players also think like him because they also want some spare time for their friends and families. Still it is unsure how far this debate will go but it is quite clear that O’Sullivan is not ready to take part
in the snooker season so far. It will be interesting to see how long this tussle goes on as the fans are really looking forward to seeing Ronnie in action.
