Ronnie O’Sullivan in talks again for smoking in press conference – Snooker News
Once again the former three-time World Snooker Champion from England, the legendary Ronnie O’Sullivan is caught in another controversy. After crashing out of the 2012 China Open snooker tournament, the veteran had a press conference where he came with a
cigarette in his hands and he was flying smokes all around during the gathering.
He was in a lighter mood and spoke bluntly in the press conference. What added more spice into this was his comments that he made during the non-smoking press conference at the Beijing University Students Gymnasium arena. His comments made the critics a
bit angry and they thought that he should not have done that.
Speaking during the press conference, O’Sullivan said, “They don't let you (smoke) in England, but in China, you can do what you want. I like it like that.”
Unfortunately, he was caught on camera when he made these remarks and the critics are seeing that as a morally inappropriate way to present himself. The Wordsley potter was punished by the snooker governing body, World Snooker for such behaviour. He will
not be awarded the appearance money and the ranking points he earned after participating in the 2012 China Open snooker tournament.
The legendary potter has been in a number of controversies due to his blunt remarks and sometimes due to his problems with the association. Many times the Essex Exocet had a verbal brawl with the World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn because of the steps he
took to improve the game.
However, his campaign in the China Open was impressive as he made his way into the quarter-final stage despite the after effects of glandular fever. He lost to the China Open runner up, Scotland’s Stephen Maguire in the quarters by a close score line of
5-4 on a respotted black.
Before coming to the Beijing University Students Gymnasium, O’Sullivan missed the 2012 Haikou World Open and the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Grand Finals due to his illness. Even before Beijing event, O’Sullivan’s doctor had advised him not to
take part in any snooker tournament but he did not listen to him and participated in the contest.
