Ronnie O’Sullivan leads Shaun Murphy 9-7 – 2011 World Snooker Championship
The Rocket, Ronnie O’Sullivan has ended his second session with a 9-7 lead over Shaun Murphy, in the second round of the 2011 World Snooker Championship, which is being held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
Three-time world champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan, who ended his opening session with a 6-2 lead in his favour, wants to make a strong bid for this year’s World title, as he still holds a two frame lead. However, former 2005 world champion, Shaun Murphy, has
also shown a spirited performance by cutting into his opponents lead.
It has been an old fashioned game so far, as neither player has been able to produce a century break as of yet.
The overall score-line between both players was 65 (58)-36, 88-15, 68-51, 30-72, 79 (78)-13, 80 (76)-1, 84 (75)-32, 86 (86)-0, 18-69, 55 (55)-67 (51), 76 (76)-44, 28-90 (55), 95(95)-21 and 69 (59)-23.
O’Sullivan stormed into a 3-0 lead in the opening session, before Murphy bounced back and won two frames in a row to come within one frame at 3-2. Thirty-five-year-old, O’Sullivan, however restored his three frames lead, as he fired up classy breaks of 76,
75 and 86 in the last three frames respectively.
In the second session, the Magician dominated the first two frames to reduce the deficit at 6-4 before the World Number ten, O’Sullivan, racked up a carving break of 76 in the following eleventh frame. Though the World Number six, Murphy, managed in winning
the twelfth frame, he lost the thirteenth again, as his opponent mopped up a frame-winning break of 95.
O’Sullivan then further extended his lead to 9-5 by pocketing the following fourteenth frame with a decisive break of 59. Twenty-six-year-old, Murphy, then clawed back with all of his energy to clinch the last two frames. He also showcased a marvellous break
of 83 in the fifteenth frame.
Both players will start-off with their third and final session today and the winner will face John Higgins or Rory McLeod in the quarter-final.
