Ronny Rios beats Guillermo Sanchez via unanimous decision – Boxing News
Ronny Rios went head to head with Guillermo Sanchez at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, CA, on Saturday night. The bout was surprisingly one-sided and Rios completely dominated Guillermo. The first round was a bit tough for Rios but the following rounds were
fully in his hands.
Throughout the fight, Rios delivered some powerful yet technically sound hooks and crossed to Sanchez’s head. All Sanchez could do was to counter Rios’ attacks with straight left hand shots and uppercuts but it did not really work. Sanchez struggled throughout
the fight to damage Rios but he could not. The final scorecards from all three judges had Rios as winner with the scores being 80-72, 80-72 and 79-73.
As for now, Ronny Rios has another win in his portfolio making his overall wins 18 with 0 losses and 8 knockouts, whereas Sanchez is now at 13 wins, 6 losses, 1 tie and 5 knockouts.
Sanchez came to the ring with a disappointing record of winning only 2 fights in his last 7 fights. Rios did not show much interest in fighting Sanchez. In his interview before the fight, Rios said, “Originally, we were told that we were going to fight a
southpaw, so I sparred against (unbeaten southpaw) Luis Ramos. We worked for about six weeks in preparation for this fight. I don’t watch tapes of fights. I let my corner (Hector Lopez) take care of that. We were working on defense for this particular camp.
Based on how we’ve trained, we hope to break him down and take him out in the later rounds. I could be fighting in front of a sold out crowd in a 15,000-seat arena. However, I have to follow my game plan. I have to stick to being a professional in the ring
and not let the crowd reaction get to me.”
Rios has proved his stance by defeating Sanchez, showing the world he is better than this and that he should get better opportunities. Probably, now Rios might get to fight against a better and more competitive fighter. As he said, he wanted to fight a southpaw
and if this works out this would be best for him.
