Rookie Eric Hosmer’s hitting takes Kansas City Royals past New York Yankees 4-3 - MLB Update
The Kansas City Royals romped to a 4-3 victory in the eleventh inning of the second game against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, May 11 to bounce back in the three-game series 1-1.
Jorge Posada hit an RBI single off the Royals’ starter, Vin Mazzaro, in the second inning to provide the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. Curtis Granderson launched a huge 421-feet long one-run homer, his twelfth of the season to take his club to 2-0 in the bottom
of the third inning.
The Royals’ rookie hitter, Eric Hosmer launched his maiden career homer off the Yankees’ starter, Allan Jones Burnett in the top of the fourth inning to trim the lead by one run.
After consuming this hit, Burnett did not allow any run in his later innings and finished his spell in the top of the eighth inning, consuming just one run on one hit, allowing five walks and getting six strike-outs.
"It's pretty frustrating, considering the way A.J. pitched," the Yankees' Brett Gardner said. "It's probably the longest game we've played all year and we came up on the short end."
As soon as Burnett handed the ball to David Robertson, the Royals’ third baseman, Wilson Betemit added an RBI double to tie the game 2-2 in the eighth inning. Realising the game could slip out of their hands, the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi immediately
relieved Robertson with Boone Logan, who tossed three strike pitches.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Yankees employed their top closer Mariano Rivera, who held the Royals scoreless.
As the Royals’ reliever, Aaron Crow was pitching brilliantly for last three innings, the club’s manager Ned Yost continued with him for the ninth inning. The 24-year-old rookie pitcher threw excellent ninth inning forcing the game into extra innings.
In the tenth inning, Jeff Francoeur added a leading RBI single off the Yankees closer Buddy Carlyle, to take his club 3-2. However, Curtis Granderson hit to the right side of the field for an RBI single to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the tenth inning.
In the eleventh inning, Hosmer again came into action, this time with a sacrifice fly-off Buddy to the centre of the field to take his team 4-3.
Hosmer expressed his excitement saying. "They're both big, but winning the game is what we come here for. I fell down 0-2 to a tough pitcher out of the bullpen, knowing Getz is on third and can run, and just tried to get it out in play and get him home."
The Royals’ closer, Louis Coleman pitched a perfect inning to earn a win for his club.
