Rookie Firefighters?

What position do most rookie firefighters take? Would they be able to get right into rescuing people from burning buildings or do they have to work thier way up to that?

Typically, Rookies hook hydrants, and take the k**b or nozzle. Setting up ground ladders, and getting tools are other tasks they may be required to do. They start out on an engine and work their way up to Truck companies and Rescue companies. If it's a small department a rook may have to be a jack of all trades and do it all. It just depends on the size and requirements of the department they work for.
