Rookie QB Andrew Luck insists not worried about deal, hopes it done by training camp – NFL News
Indianapolis Colts’ rookie quarterback, Andrew Luck, insists he is not worried about his deal matter, declining to reflect on the recently emerged news of some differences with the team management over endorsements rights.
He said he has authorised his agent to take care of the deal and he is focused on football. The QB said he has already missed a substantial amount of time, training and workout given he had to return to Stanford College to finish his remaining
courses on the Architectural Design degree.
A number of reports a week ago pointed out at the development of differences between the player’s agent and the team management over control of his client's marketing rights.
Apparent reason as described in those reports was that the management wants to have some control over the endorsement rights of the player to keep him limited to few masters.
The owner, Jim Irsay, has denied they are in any sort of conflict on any matter of the deal with the player, including the endorsement terms, and insisted they are closer to land him a contract.
Jim did not speculate a timeline for signing the contract, which now the player has hopped is done well before the training camp.
He said:
"I let my agent handle all the contract stuff. If it's not done by training camp, which hopefully it is, then we've gotta make the best of the situation. But I'll let my agent worry about the rest of the stuff. Catching up with the football
stuff is enough for my mind, so I'll focus on that."
He added:
"I focus on football, especially having missed so much (practice) time because of school. I didn't want very many distractions to make sure I catch up in terms of time with everybody else. My agent (Will Wilson) will handle (negotiations)."
The league rules state that a rookie has to be under contract to qualify for training camp, and if somehow Luck is not able to sign a deal with Colts by next month, he will certainly be out of the camp. In reality, this looks less possible.
Colts have asked their players to report to them a day before the start of the camp, on July 28. The camp will open on July 29.
