Rookie QB Brandon Weeden drops 4th year deal guarantee demand, accepts Cleveland Browns terms – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden heads for training camp after the team confirmed him a four-year contract, which has been agreed as per their terms, including guaranteeing it for three years instead of the player’s demand of four years.
Brandon is given a four-year, $8.1 million contract. The signing was delayed because the Browns insisted to guarantee only three years but the player’s agent had made a case for guaranteeing all four years. The demand was rejected and after much consideration
the player agreed to accept the condition of a three-year guaranteed contract.
This finally sets the tone of the pro career for the rookie who is expected to be preferred over the incumbent QB Colt McCoy for the starting role straightaway.
Although the team has officially not confirmed Brandon as the offence leader, he is most likely to take snaps with the starting group immediately after the start of the formal training activity.
Weeden, who was selected late in the first round off the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, impressed Browns’ second-year head coach Pat Shurmur and onlookers during the team’s mandatory three-day minicamp.
Pat is particularly content with the player's throwing arm strength and his ability to quickly adapt to the Browns’ west coast offence requirements. The accuracy in his throws is another plus for the team.
This was the initial impression that the player left on the team and he is expected to further convince them through his performance at training camp. He really did not have much time before to show off the true potential and level of skills he has got.
Although the rookie faces Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy on the starting line, the latter two players are less likely to be given the leadership role.
Colt particularly has no chance this season. He already started for the Browns in 13 games last season before missing last three with a concussion and fell short of impressing the team.
McCoy is seen on the prospects of trade to another team, most probably for a backup position. The Browns are to officially confirm the prospective move yet, though.
