Rookie QB Brandon Weeden rises above average after poor start to pro career – NFL News
Rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden has shown a glimpse of hope to the Cleveland Browns about better performance prospects in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday irrespective of the fact that he ended up on the losing side.
Brandon was able to complete 26 out of 37 passes for a total of 322 yards, though he could not help the Browns avoid 27-34 loss in a competitively played and closely finished game.
It was an impressive rebound by the rookie on the poor start to his pro career, after failing to capitalise on a number of conducive opportunities in the preseason and then in the regular season’s starter.
The only man hopeful of Brandon staging a comeback was coach Pat Shurmur, and Weeden’s Bengals’ game figures showed the coach was right in his calculations.
Although Pat was impressed what the offence leader delivered in the game, he clearly sounded not to be satisfied or done yet. The coach said:
“Yeah I thought Brandon did some things better and as a coach looking at a there was still some areas where can improve on. But he's learned some things about how - can help you you know short. We're trying to throw the ball downfield
and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice. So he's learned some things. And I think he made some progress today.”
Pat may be right in his wisdom but Brandon has at least proved that he has got the potential to learn and grow. He can learn even faster provided someone from top coaching crop individually works with him to rectify some of insignificant
and clearly avoidable mistakes.
Weeden himself has come out positive and optimistic about his performance. He said:
"We're getting there. The running game definitely takes a lot of pressure off of me. It helps when you run the ball."
The performance may not be enough to silence Weeden’s critics but it can certainly downplay the fans’ demand of replacing him with QB Colt McCoy as a leader. The only aspect of Weenden’s potential to be seen yet is his consistency, and
if he is able to perform consistently well, he shall be on the course of a successful league career, with or without Browns.
