Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill upbeat to lead Miami Dolphins in season opener – NFL News
Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Ryan Tannehill is upbeat about the upcoming opportunity to lead the team’s offence from the regular season opener on September 09.
The player's move towards the top slot has been quick and entirely out of the blue. A series of events has facilitated arrival of the opportunity for the rookie who was least likely considered for the starting role at the start of training camp.
Even during training camp he did not impress, after being given the opportunity behind veteran David Garrard and incumbent Matt Moore – both quarterbacks were in clear contentions for the top role.
Ryan has all of sudden emerged on the top following a sudden requirement of surgery for David to fix his lingering knee problem. David was on top of the depth chart before hitting the sidelines, while Moore remains to be a time-and-again-tested horse and
the team will consider the least to try him out again.
The rookie says of the opportunity:
"If it would have been in Buffalo or San Diego, I’m excited. Obviously, it’s nice to go back to my home state. I’ll have a lot of friends and family there, but I’m just excited to play in my first real NFL game, a real season opener. I’m excited for this
team. I’m excited for what we can do."
There is a unanimous view in the league that Tannehill is a talented player with a potential to excel at all levels, but unfortunately he arrived in Miami with only a year’s experience of playing college league as a quarterback.
At the very outset of his start in the preseason game he looked very shaky and could not find a sense of direction on the field. He grasped the situation gradually and remarkably well.
Although the progress is slow the player has been showing signs of improvement with passage of every game. This is probably the main reason that first-year coach Joe Philbin has trusted him for the leadership of the team’s offence.
It now remains to be seen how the QB copes with the pro career situation in the regular season, which is definitely going to be totally a different environment to play in.
