Rookie pitcher Jeremy Hefner records first Major League win for New York Mets - MLB Update
Rookie pitcher, Jeremy Hefner's starting and recording first Major League win make him a source of consolation for the New York Mets. A club, which is used to of witnessing their starters go for plenty on the mound, can easily find Hefner a great discovery.
He not only threw a reasonable spell of six innings, he slammed a home-run, which added frosting on the cake.
With Mike Pelfrey out due to injury and Jon Niese not being as consistent as the manager Terry Collins will like, the Mets have serious issues with their pitchers.
Although Hefner’s time is not going to be longer in the season, once Chris Young comes back from shoulder injury, at-least he has an opportunity to show his mettle at big stage until then.
Most probably, he will be starting for the Mets for one more time. His presence may prolong, in case, some of the pitchers do not rehabilitate in time.
As regard to his outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, he gave up three runs. He was lucky enough to receive proper run-support and that helped him earn his first win in the end.
Talking about a mammoth home-run he struck in the game, he calls it more a result of being lucky for making a perfect connection than anything technical.
“I almost missed first base watching the ball,” Hefner said. “I was just trying to get a hit, trying to extend the inning, but I happened to get lucky and caught it good.”
Mets’ manager Terry Collins stresses the need for experiencing certain things for a pitcher to get to a reasonable level.
“There is a point where I think you’ve got to grow and you’ve got to let them sometimes get themselves out of trouble,” Collins said. “I thought tonight was one of those times.”
Irrespective of injuries to some of the pitchers, the Mets will like to see their star starters, Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey, continue showing great performances.
These two have the potential to take the Mets to victories in crucial games.
How far they can help the struggling pitching department of the Mets is going to be interesting to observe in the games to follow.
