Rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins shines as Washington Redskins thrash Tampa Bay Buccaneers – NFL Recap
Washington Redskins backup quarterback Kirk Cousins showed some exciting talent on the field on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, as Redskins completely overpowered Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-3.
Cousins showed that he could be trusted with the starting role in the upcoming season in case the second overall pick of this year’s draft Robert Griffin III (RG3) becomes unavailable.
Cousins played till the third quarter and completed 15 out of 27 passes for a total of 222 yards. He also threw an interception.
Meanwhile, Buccaneers wide receiver Tiquan Underwood looked to impress the team as he caught six catches for 82 yards.
Underwood is facing a possibility to be cut from the 75-man roster. He has been previously cut six times in his career. Underwood said:
"I left it all out there. I'm just leaving it in God's hands and in the coach's hands. I went out there and played my heart out."
Both teams put up their backups on the field for this game, so there was not much anticipation from the crowd which was a bit low in numbers.
Redskins saw the return of both of their backup running backs, Evan Royster and Roy Helu Jr. It will certainly give some boost to their running game which is currently looking miserable.
Redskins started the game as they stormed through the field to give the opportunity to veteran kicker Billy Cundiff to score a field goal. Then Cundiff got another opportunity with less than a minute left in the first half as he scored a 27-yard field goal.
With 6-0 up coming into the second half, Redskins did not take much time to score the first touchdown of the game with receiver Royster covering just a yard to get into the end zone.
In the last play of the first half, Redskins scored another field goal to take the score 16-0. Buccaneers’ defence was all over the place at that point of time.
Helu started the third quarter for the Redskins and immediately got into action as he covered 15 yards to reach the end zone.
Buccaneers finally broke the deadlock with a 43-yard kick from Kai Forbath. Helu then got the breakthrough in the 11th minute as he managed to score a touchdown with a six-yard run.
Both teams failed to put up any numbers in the final quarter of the game. Both Redskins and Buccaneers are facing a tough season ahead of them with the lack of elite players on the roster.
