Rookie receiver Justin Blackmon in injury scare, Jacksonville Jaguars hopeful of his return to OTAs
Jacksonville Jaguars have pinned their hopes on rookie receiver, Justin Blackmon, to be regular during the team’s workout, starting on May 15, 2012, when the Organised Team Activities (OTAs) start.
Blackmon, who signed with Jaguars as a draft player a week ago, watched his teammates working out on the last day of the minicamp on Sunday, May 06, from the sidelines.
He did not participate in the workout due to a foot injury.
He remained regular in the practice during the first two days of the camp but was only limited to getting acquainted with new teammates, coaches and staff members of the front office.
Following the conclusion of the three-day minicamp, Jaguars’ coach, Mike Mularkey, said that Blackmon had a sore foot and therefore, was unable to take part in the camp's activities on the last day.
The coach said that it was not a serious problem and the player would be regular in the OTAs.
He said the player had "general soreness in the foot" and the team was "being precautionary with this camp.”
The coach added:
“We just thought this would be smart on our part and his part if we just held him out of the drills."
Jaguars’ new head coach supervised the minicamp, which was his first activity with the team since his arrival in Jacksonville to replace former head coach, Del Rio, in January.
Rio had been fired by former owner of the club, Wayne Weaver, for his dissatisfaction over the coach’s performance, which, he noted, was far below his given target.
Jaguars are now owned by Pakistan-born American businessman, Shahid Khan, who has spoken of holding great ambitions for the side.
The team is coming out in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season with Blaine Gabbert as the starting quarterback.
Gabbert will play his second season with the team, and he was also the regular quarterback last year.
Blackmon’s signing was in line with the team’s efforts to strengthen its offensive department. He will be receiving throws from Gabbert after rejoining the squad for the OTAs, probably next season.
