Rookies OL Mike Adams, David DeCastro win Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason opener call – NFL News
Coach Mike Tomlin has confirmed the Pittsburgh Steelers have included offensive linemen Mike Adams and David DeCastro in the preseason opening game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mike said both players have done impressively well at training camp and are being given an opportunity to start for the team in the preseason opener.
The coach after naming the players as a part of the squad officially on past Tuesday said:
"They've had good moments and some not-so-good moments. That is the process that is team development and individual development. But both guys have worked extremely hard, both guys finish and they're smart young men. We'll see more about them, and of course
we'll know more about them by Thursday night."
As per details provided by the coach, Adams, who was selected by the Steelers as their second pick in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, will be placed at left tackle, and DeCastro at right guard. DeCastro was selected at 24th overall
position off the draft.
Both players have performed remarkably well at training camp and now upbeat about winning the call for the preseason campaign.
DeCastro said:
"I'm excited to get ready to go and ready to hit someone else other than the Steelers. I just want to have fun, play the game and enjoy it."
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger meanwhile has welcomed the nomination of the pair, saying they form a great group of players.
DeCastro, who has played with Indianapolis Colts’ rookie quarterback Andrew Luck at Stanford, is expected to have a greater role in protection of Big Ben.
Under offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s new offensive scheme, Ben is likely to be targeted by the oppositions’ defences more frequently this season, and if both players play their part effectively, they are most likely to win long-term opportunity from
the team.
Ben who has been watching DeCastro at training camp throughout is hopeful about his potential. The plus for the rookie is his college league’s experience. He has already played with a high-profile QB and this should help him gaining in confidence quickly,
which will matter a lot in his ability to adapt to the real game conditions.
