Ok when I ask people what color should I paint my room they usually ask me what color is my "favorite" well I like Black but my parents won't let me paint it black. So I was wondering if someone could help, I'm instead going to use my favorite themes instead of favorite color, so here they are:

Military

Outdoors

Modern

Choose one or more of these and tell me the colors that go with them. Cuz truthfully I don't know. BTW I am 16 years old.

  2. I see (and hear) this problem alot in my store. Parents don't want to be embarrased by thier kids rooms, and teens want to express themselves. My advice to you is simple. First you need to remind your parents that they were young too and had a room thier parents hated. 60's tie die, 70's retro or some godawfull 80's theme. Second you need to find out what they consider acceptable, it is thier roof you live under after all, but you may be able to work a compromise. The third part is the most important. You are 16 in two or three years you might head off to college, if this is the case this is your bargaining chip. Make an agreement with them to repaint before you go away, this might lessen the blow.

As far as colors are concerned you said you like black, well there is no need to paint the walls black (it would make the room too small anyway), but nothing says you can't use black hilights, such as a black comforter, black curtains, repainting the furniture black etc. Really find a color that will work with black and keep the parents happy. Let them know that a black comforter can be put away and replaced when company comes if they're the kind of parents that like to give guided tours of your room. Also let them know that you are an adult and they can always acknowledge your privacy and your personal space by closing the door when company comes.

Work your colors around your carpeting or flooring, basicly thats not going to change. If you want see about painting the furniture, again permission from parents is needed. You can go to any paint store and pic up swatches, usually color collections. You can also go to the library and look through the home magazines, for black themed rooms. Sometimes if you show the parents what you want you put them a little more at ease. Compromise is the key, if you can master that, picking the colors and painting the room is a snap. If you're really good they might even like the idea and help.

  3. modern. use a gray/silver and red theme

  4. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think it would look smart to paint your room a gray like "gray matters" (# 7066) and then get dark red or peacock blue bedding. It would look very industrial, masculine & modern.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
