my room is EXTREMELY hot and my dad refuses to put the ac any lower than 25c which really isnt that bad when your down stairs, but as soon as you walk up stairs it doesnt do jack. i have the hottest room in the entire house and my fan is always on whenever im in my room but it doesnt work in the afternoon when its so hot you cant even breath... all it does is blow hot air around. so basicly my question is: how do I make my room not so hot? and asking my dad to turn the thermo-stat down is out of the question, and so is any thing that requires contruction like a vent or somthing, thanks! :D

  1. make sure the house windows are properly cauked and doors have the insulation seals on the side. The house maybe loosing cold air. By proper insulating the house will hold in the ac better in the summer, and heat in the winter. Change all the bulbs to those new squirrley type bulbs. They dont throw out the heat. They also save on the electric bills. Close vents on rooms that are not used that much like the laundry room, bath rooms (but will have to keep the door closed at all times if you close those vents). The bulbs cost alittle more but save on the long run. Do not cook on top of the stove or use the oven use the microwave instead. Dont use the clothes dryer but hang them outside instead. Do dishes by hand and dont use the dishwasher. All this will have you hundreds on the electric bill and cool your room off some.

Hot air always rises which means upstairs will be hotter. Try buying a fan. If hot at night, use the old trick we use to do before ac, wet a sheet with cold water and wring it out and cover your self. It also works like a charm. That  is how we did it in the old days when I was young. I also live in Texas back in the 80's when there was 100 days of over 100 degrees and could not afford ac. We used the wet sheet method.

  2. You can buy a window fan similar to the one at the url below and use it to blow the hot air out of the room during the hottest part of the day. If you have a vent in your bedroom then close it if you can, or else you will just be wasting energy by letting the fan pull the cold air out along with the hot.

Another thing you can do is buy some insulated curtains, it will help keep the cool air from escaping through the window and keep the room dark as well.

  3. Are you using a window fan? If so turn it around so it blows the hot air outside.

  4. keep the windows close have your fan on all the time try to keep the lights off.and ask your dad to stay in there for a couple of hrs to lite him see how hot it is in there and get a huge fan the biggest you can find and have both blowing at the same time

  5. First remember your dad has to cover the cost of the entire household.

    (1) Open the registers all the way; make sure they are not blocked. Close the blinds if on the Sunny side.

    (2)  Ask your dad if he can check if there is sufficient insulation in the ceiling R22 rating.

    (3) Or Install a small (1) room window air-conditioner.

    (4) Or sleep on a lower floor during the summer months until your father can afford to satisfy your request.

  6. Hot air rises, open a window in your room and point the fan to exhaust the air from the house,  then try to close all of the AC vents downstairs and open them wide upstairs. The cool air will circulate down even with the fan, but it should cool your room.  Also turn off all electronics in your room and unplug the computers and TV. This should decrease the heat generating items in you room.  Keep your door open for the air to circulate better.

  7. Keep the shades down when the sun is shining in those windows, pit aluminum foil on the windows to reflect the sun.  Open a window and turn the fan out to pull the hot air out and draw cool air from the hall.
