Roommate or Single?

Question

I'm going to a big university in the fall and I'd like to dorm in a single so I can have my own personal space when I need it. My parents are concerned I will be missing out on an integral part of the college experience if I don't have a roommate. Does anyone have experience or comments on living in a single?

I have had single rooms and roommates and I will take the single room anytime..my roommate and I got along OK but she had several things that really bothered me and she didn't seem to care.. To have a roommate you have to really be willing to give a LOT more than you recieve.. You may not have a nice quiet roommate who is there to study and learn. you may have one who sits up all night and parties and drinks and could care less if you or she learns..You must be willing to accept her personality..whatever it is.. good or bad.. Your roommate may be a filthy slob and may never clean the room and she may be a neat freak...you just never know.. You can always request room and roommate changes.. HOWEVER, as a freshman, that isn't always possible and as previously said, it's not always possible to have a private room either. Most colleges will not let freshman have single rooms. In most colleges there are a LOT more students than dorm space.. so even if you pay extra, it's not an option.. You and your roomate could be best friends and they may be the roommate from HEL L.. you just don't know..So, I don't know if there is a good answer to this.. either way can be + or -

If you are entering in as a freshman, you may not have much of a choice.  Student housing is in so much demand at many schools freshman may get to their room and find they have two roommates not just one.

If you want a private room and are willing to pay for it, then do it..... personally, I remember the great times and the jokes we used to pull on each other.
