“He’s just a boy in a playground who needs a spanking”, ‘He’s got too much money, so they should take some off him to teach him a lesson” ….. These are just a couple of phrases I’ve heard about Rooney since his outburst on Saturday after scoring against West Ham and I find them disturbing, making me question our attitudes and his punishment.
Although there are rumours that Rooney will get a telling off and a fine for the incident on Saturday, would this really result in better behaviour from him on the pitch? As it's happened twice in under a year, I doubt it. And how much of a dent in his pocket would it really make? Maybe we should instead look if there's a reason behind his actions.
When mouthing off abuse at the cameras on Saturday he seemed to release a lot of built up anger, similar to his behaviour in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Algeria-c2835 match. But where does this anger stem from? Was he angry because he felt the whole team wasn’t playing well and supporting him on Saturday? Maybe, but is there more to it?
He’s been in the news regularly over the past few years for having flings with hookers, even whilst his wife was pregnant. He’s also been blamed for his teams’ poor performance, whether it’s MUFC or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749. Rooney definitely acts as though he’s extremely angry with everyone, and I think it’s most likely because he feels that most are against him.
Perhaps some media and football fans are to blame. We, for some reason, forget there’s a whole team to point the finger at sometimes and focus on one person. Last year during the World Cup it was Rooney as he was 'tiring', 'played like an old man' and 'had put on a bit of weight'. Maybe it’s because he’s one of the most famous football players and we expect the most from him. If something goes wrong for United, most people also blame Rooney. I certainly don’t hear of many other players taking much of the blame.
So perhaps the only way Rooney’s behaviour might change in the future is if we change the way we treat http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736. If we don’t, his behaviour may worsen. We’ve seen what happens to footballers when they are under pressure and angry. Manchester United’s Eric Cantona was fined £20,000 and banned from playing football over his kung fu-style attack on a fan.
So maybe we should forget about fines and scoldings and give Rooney more support rather than continuous criticism and abuse. After all, it doesn’t matter how much he earns, he’s only human and has feelings just like the rest of us. Maybe once he feels more settled and supported he might actually surprise us all, and instead of celebrating his goals with a ‘F******g what!’, it might be more of a ‘Wahhhoooooooo.. Thank you fans for all your support. I love you all’!!!
