The English striker claims that he would be delighted if he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton’s scoring record for Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749.
Regarded as one of the greatest players the Three Lions have ever managed to produce, it’s no wonder that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 is considered to be the country’s biggest hope in the quest for silverware.
England’s sole conquest at 1966 World Cup in their own backyard remains their only major success on the International front and the backbone of that feat was Bobby Charlton, who pulled the strings from the centre of the park.
Genuinely blessed as a two-footed playmaker, the United legend bore the brunt of the Germans during the finale and was hailed throughout the land for his achievements.
However, it’s his immense scoring record that captivates most fans, as despite being a midfielder, he is still the number one scorer on England’s list and has the same honour at the Theatre of Dreams.
Rooney is perhaps the only player who has gotten close to breaking Charlton’s long standing record and that too on both fronts.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c39043 starlet is only 17 strikes behind in his International tally, while 64 goals are required to make him the Red Devils’ all time top marksman.
With plenty of time on his side, Rooney claimed that he could potentially achieve the feat and be regarded even more highly in the Premier League.
"Sir Bobby Charlton holds both (records) so that's a great challenge. The guy is a legend and is such a presence around the club. If I could break his record as Manchester United's top goalscorer and maybe even England's...wow! That is such a great incentive.”
Continuing, the player added that while he was going settle back as an attacking midfielder at some point during his career, for now he wanted to lead the line and get his name on the score sheet as much as possible.
"I want to play as long as I can. At least another 10 years would be great. I can see myself one day moving back into midfield - I can do it - but I'm not ready yet. I'm a centre-forward and I score goals. I feel I have plenty of goals left in me,” the front-man
was quoted as saying while speaking to the media.
