The match was also blemished by a controversial decision in the 7th minute, when Ashley Young went down rather easily inside the box, to win a penalty for United. The Aston Villa manager, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 McLeish lashed out at the match officials after the
game for giving the decision in favour of the former Villa player, who was also involved in a similar stunt against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 last week.
The United manager, Alex Ferguson when talking about the incident is reported to have said, “It was a dramatic fall, but it was definitely a penalty, no doubts about that. It was a good result and a good performance, the first half in particular.”
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andreas-Weimann-c5768 posed an early threat for the hosts from a long ball, only minutes after the kick-off, but his left footed attempt was easily kept out by the United goalkeeper, De Gea.
Moments later, the home side were awarded a penalty kick, after Young caught the leg of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ciaran-Clark-c9247 inside the box. The Villa players were seen livid with the decision, as the 22 year old had appeared to make minimal contact with the winger.
However, Rooney stepped up for United and bamboozled the Villa goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Shay-Given-c33284 by making him dive to the wrong side, to score his 30th goal of the season.
The former Manchester City shot stopper then denied Welbeck and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-Scholes-c29394 with good reflex saves, and saw a powerful volley from the latter miss the goal by a whisker.
Even though the visitors weathered most of the attacks from United in the first period, the hosts bagged their second goal, two minutes from the halftime interval.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nathan-Baker-c27374 made an error as he let the ball go past him, and Welbeck slotted the ball home with his sliding effort.
A couple of early attacks from United in the opening stages of the second half were dealt with by the Villa defence. The visitors then made a rare effort on goal themselves, through a header from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emile-Heskey-c12468, but his effort was nothing which De Gea could
not handle.
However, United took the game further away from Villa in the 73rd minute. Rooney beat Given for the second time on the evening, after his shot took a wicked deflection off http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/James-Collins-c17687.
Nani then provided the icing on the cake in stoppage time, as he latched on to a through ball from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonny-Evans-c19085 and scored the fourth goal for United, to cement their position at the summit of the league.
