Rooney’s clashes with Ferguson, five probable replacements for striker (Part 3)
Here are some of the players, who could have possibly replaced Manchester United’s striker, Wayne Rooney.
Luis Alberto Suarez
The starving Ajax skipper just produced a storm in the recent FIFA World Cup 2010. Suarez is a gem of the Dutch Champions academy and was already in Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson hit list.
However, the amount of 35 million wanted by Ajax is a heavy thing to bear for Manchester. But the sale of Wayne could have increased the flow of money and helped to land the Uruguayan star at Old Trafford.
The Uruguayan attacker is just at twenty-three years of age and is a flawless poacher of the ball. The Ajax hit-man scored 35 goals in 33 games for his club last season and has opened his goal scoring account this season with seven goals in seven matches.
Luis Suarez is one of the potential attackers Manchester United may have been looking for to crack the highest levels. Manchester United’s current in-form forward, Dimitar Berbatov, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s new signing, Javier Hernandez, are both good goal-scorers. Thus, the addition of the electrifying young Uruguayan would have boosted Manchester United’s title chances.
Without a doubt, Luis Suarez would have been Rooney’s best replacement.
Edin Dzeko
The 24-year-old is one of the most talented strikers around the globe. Recently, he has also arisen as the most dynamic player for the German outfit, Wolfsburg.
Edin was transferred to Wolfsburg for €4 million during 2007 summers. The Bosnian international was an immediate hit after joining Wolfsburg. Dzeko scored 11 goals and recorded three assists in 11 games in his first season.
Edin was also named as the best forward in the first half of the Bundesliga League of 2007-08 season. During Dzeko’s first season, he helped his club to finish at the fifth spot in the German League. Dzeko finished his 2007–08 season with eight goals and seven assists in seventeen games.
After the arrival of Zvjezdan Misimović at Wolfsburg, Edin’s performance was boosted and he was outstanding in the second season. Wolfsburg found their form in the second half of that season and eventually claimed the German League title for the first time in their history.
In the final stages of that season, Dzeko scored a hat-trick against one of the German league’s title contenders. The Bosnian international added another hat-trick just two weeks later and contributed towards a solid finish to the 2008–09 season. Dzeko finished with a total of 26 league goals and 10 assists in 32 league matches.
Edin’s goal tally was second only to his team-mate with whom he formed the most fatal attack combination in Bundesliga history. In Bundesliga’s knockout club competition, Wolfsburg’s talismanic striker scored six goals in two matches and in the UEFA Cup, four goals and two assists in eight matches.
Edin Dzeko was also named as the "Bundesliga Players' Footballer of the Year", after very exceptional performances for his club. He scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Manchester in a 2–1 defeat in an away fixture on 30th September 2009. Moreover, Wolfsburg’s young striker was one of the thirty players nominated for the 2009 Ballon d'Or. He was named as the thirteenth best player on the planet.
In addition to that, Edin also became the top scorer of the Bundesliga in the 2009–10 season by scoring 22 goals for his club. At the start of this season, Edin Dzeko has managed to become the all-time top goal scorer of his club by scoring fifty-nine goals in only ninety-six appearances.
