Question:

Root Canal, pain a week later?

I had a root canal done almost two weeks ago. The doctor prescribed antibiotics because he said there could be infection. I took the antibiotics for two days and then stopped because of other medical problems (kidney stone). I forgot to start taking them again. Last night the same pain I had before the root canal came back. I have started the anibiotics again (I had only taken about 6 previously). My dental apointment is in a week. Should I be worried something went wrong with the root canal or does this sound like it an infection. I will be bringing this up to my dentist before the permanent crown is put on next Wednesday, but I'd appreciate opinions in the meantime.

  1. It sounds like maybe there might be an infection in any case if the pain does not subside or becomes extreme you oughta contact your dentist and maybe you can get it checked before your appointment.

  2. Yes, you definitely should bring this up before having the crown placed.  The tooth should not have any problems prior to the crown being placed.

It is possible that there is an infection, but there are many other possibilities as well.

Root canals can be complicated.  Many teeth have more than one main canal, so it is possible that all the canals were not located/cleaned out.  There also may be accessory canals that are contributing to the problems, or it is possible that the tooth has a fracture (which would not be good).  Or, as mentioned, there may still be an infection.

In any case, I would just take the antibiotics until they are gone (what you should have done in the first place), and if let your dentist know what happened regardless of whether the symptoms go away or not before your appointment.

  3. If you have pain in the Root Canal Treated tooth, then you should not go immediately go for permanent crown. If infection is there then the dentist has to find out the cause by taking xray. For more on Root Canal Therapy go to the following site
