Question:

Root Canal 7 years ago, cap came off 2 months ago....?

I had a root canal when I was about 10. On June 27th of this year I was chewing on a milk dud and it came off, no pain. I was wondering how much longer this can wait? It's gotten to the point where I can feel something under my gum if I put pressure on the surface(bone or rotted tooth maybe?), and it hurts a lot after doing so. What are the consequences of waiting? Also- what could a dentist decide to do besides putting in a replacement cap? What's the worst case scenario?

To clarify, this is not my fault. I'm 17 and have been pestering my parent to make an appointment. I actually had one a month ago but I wasn't able to get the ride there.

  1. well if there is infection in the tooth you may need a retreat rootcanal post and core and then a new crown. if the tooth is broken beyond the gum line they might have to do crown lengthing. this is if the tooth is savable. in worst case the tooth is fractured below gum line or there is extensive decay and you would need the tooth extracted. then you would have options of bridge, implant, or flipper. i would get into the dentist as soon as you can before it gets worse.

  2. Don't wait . If you do you will have to get your tooth pulled . You need to get it crowned and make sure there is no infection or the root is exposed .
