Root Canal Question?

I've never had one done. I was wondering what does it feel like? Is there pain? Do they just numb you or do they knock you out? lol. I'm scared to death.

I went to the dentist one time and during a procedure the novacaine wore off and I was in so much pain but the doctor didn't even stop!

I can handle the pain after the procedure is done but during it, NO WAY!

Thanks to anyone who answers. =0)

  1. I have had bad experiences with root canals and ill tell you they hurt like h**l.....sure they numb you up and stuff and it does help but i personally was really hurting ...not mention that this procedure is super long (depends of fast they clean inside your tooth with some special needles) ....but seriously just go in sit and try to be sleepy i guess so time passes by fast...i remember my first one was like three or four hours long........when they are done make sure ask questions and if u need one make sure they put in your crown when done or make an appointment to get it put in...the temp paste is only temp that u make it your permanent cause it works its going to cost you (trust me i learned the hard way).........oh and try not be heavy on the snacks when everything is set and done (u want to make it last!!!).............OH BY THE WAY THE ORAGEL WORKS AWESOME FOR THE PAIN AFTERWARDS

  2. I got one a few weeks ago. The numbed me up real good to make sure i couldn't feel anything. Then my dentist took a small tooth pick pipe cleaner type saw and pulled out all the nerves. and then filled it. It felt weird, but it didn't hurt until the numbness went a way a few hours later. They just gave me IBprofin for the pain. it didn't help. sorry it dose kind of stink getting one. but not as painful as i thought. But then again I survived tons of pain in my life with having leukemia. Good Luck!

  3. I had one 2 years ago and I told the doc 'specifically' - No pain, please, and he smiled and said, it's alright.

Root canals are done over a couple sessions and involves cleaning up the base of the tooth and then either filling it up and re-making with a hard porcelain type material.

It is painful to a minor extent, but overall I'd see it's a little uncomfortable at most. Try not to think too much about it. Trust your dentist and it'll be fine. All the best!

Just take a few painkillers after the procedure (3-4 hrs after the numbness wears off).
