Root Canals and Antibiotics?

Before you get a root canal should you have taken antibiotics? I went to the dentist Saturday and they told me I need to have a root canal and set the appt for Wednesday

  1. It depends. Every patient is different. If you have an abscess they will usually put you on an antibiotic first. But I used to work for an endodontist (root canal specialist) and we didn't always have our patients on antibiotics. Every case is different.

If an infection is diagnosed, then yes, you should be put on an antibiotic.  But, if endo is indicated, it could also be due to decay or the tooth breaking down which would not indicate that antibiotic therapy is needed.  Certainly, if your pain worsens and the tooth starts to throb, become sensitive to hot and/or cold, call the dental office you will be having the root canal performed so they can see you sooner.  Also, go ahead and start taking ibuprofen (dosage is on the bottle) as this will ease any pain/discomfort you are having now and will aid the healing process after endo treatment has been completed.
