I am looking for a rope knot that i can tie that has a loop that i can pull tight against whatever is inside the loop, but will not slip back the other direction. I need it to beable to slide to tightness, not just tie it tight.

Just a name of the knot will be fine. thanks

  1. Hangman's noose would work.

  2. Any hitch will satisfy your answer.

You will notice many of the answers gave you the name of a "knot" ending with the word "hitch"   A hitch is exactly what you described.  Unlike a knot, it works by tightening up around what ever it it passed around, as opposed to a knot that works by tightning against the rope itself.    Anything ending in "hitch" will function as you described, but different hitches are better suited for different applications.

  3. I'm pretty sure a buntline hitch will do the job for you

Here's a link that'll show you how to tie it:

    Good luck!

  4. what you are asking for is called a "rolling hitch"....an infinitely adjustable very well holding knot.......

  5. Try a clove hitch with two half hiches to hold it in place.
