Rory Best gunning for the Heineken Cup – Rugby News Update
Rory Best, the Irish and Ulster Hooker, is looking forward to the Heineken Cup final against rivals, Leinster, this Saturday at Twickenham, the home of English rugby.
It is the biggest European game of the season, with Leinster hoping to win back-to-back titles, along with their third triumph in four years. Ulster will be looking to stop them, and winning their second Heineken Cup. Both teams play in the RaboDirect PRO12
league, and in head-to-head matches this season, Leinster holds the upper hand but Best thinks they are going out there to win.
"This why we play rugby, for these massive games," added Best. "You need to embrace every second of that because it doesn't last forever. We have great belief when you look at the calibre of players in our squad. We fully deserve to be here. We are a good
team and we just need to show that."
Ulster had to qualify from a tough group. They had Leicester Tigers and Clermont Auvergne in their group, while they defeated former champions Munster in the quarter-finals before defeating Edinburgh in the semi-finals.
Best has indicated that this is the biggest game of the season for all players, and they desperately want to win, saying that his side is in a good position to achieve victory. There is also added the incentive for Ulster players, as their coach will leave
his position at the end of this game, and the team wants to give him a resounding send-off. No better way than to win the ultimate European prize.
"This is all about Ulster Rugby showing how far we have travelled over the last three years," Best said. "I have no doubt these guys will go on that pitch and show everyone what a quality team they are."
Best started his career with Ulster, and after winning plaudits for his performances in the league, he won his first international cap against New Zealand at Lansdowne Road, on November 12, 2005. Since then he has been ever present for the Irish team, making
a total of 59 appearances. He has started 39 of those games, while coming on as a substitute a further 20 times.
