Rory McIlroy, Martin Laird, Paul Casey, Stuart Appleby
and Charlie Hoffman miss the cut at Wells Fargo Championship
Stuart Appleby, Rory McIlroy, Martin Laird, Paul Casey and Charlie Hoffman have failed to make the cut into the weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship. The $6.5-million Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event is taking place at the par-72 Quail Hallow
Club in Charlotte.
The biggest shock came on Friday when world number six McIlroy posted a score at par and drifted out of the tournament for not making the cut. The young rookie, who recently turned 22 years of age, had the cameras locked on him throughout the day. He was
being considered as the betting favourite for the tournament based on his past form.
But the Northern Irishman did not keep his cool to keep himself in contention for the championship. He stepped into the second round with a score of 3-over-par, 75 and could not do any better to turn the tables in his favour. He bogeyed four holes against
four birdies and slipped out of contention.
Meanwhile, Hoffman who finished as the runner-up in Valero Texas Open three weeks back, followed the footsteps of the rookie. He birdied two holes in the front and two at the back before dropping six shots in the 18-hole session. The worst shot of all came
at the par-5, 18th, when Hoffman encountered a fairway bunker on the second shot and had to use two shots to retrieve the ball.
The American attained a success rate of 56 percent in Green Hits in Regulation, which had a devastating impact on his overall score.
Stuck in similar jeopardy was Laird, who won the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a few weeks ago. The Scott performed fairly well in the second round as he finished with a 68, but could not reverse the impact of the aggravating 78 from the opening round.
The player bogeyed seven holes and double-bogeyed one to destroy his scorecard.
Similar fate was met by Casey, who produced an identical scorecard, which was composed of nine bogeys against seven birdies in the 36-hole session.
Apart from these four players, Camilo Villegas, Jhonattan Vegas and Greg Chalmers also packed their bags for home.
