Rory McIlroy adds FedEx St. Jude Classic to his schedule this year
The world number two Rory McIlroy has announced to participate in the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis prior to defending the US Open title at the Olympic Club in San Francisco in the coming next week.
Usually, McIlroy does not play any event prior to the major championships in order to take some rest.
However, he has now changed his plans and currently headed to participate in the Memorial tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance.
“In Heathrow about to go to the US. Excited about the next 3 weeks! Memorial, Memphis and then defend the US Open in San Fran,” McIlroy tweeted before departing for the U.S. on Monday.
McIlroy is not enjoying a good form recently as he missed two consecutive cuts in the last two tournaments he played.
Therefore, the golf commentators now believe that the decision by McIlroy to participate in Jude Classic came with an aim to get back to form prior to his defence for the US Open.
“Maybe just not practicing as hard as I might have been,” McIlroy said after a second-round 79 to miss the cut at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week. “I’ll just have to go and really work hard and try and get it back to the level that it was
at earlier in the year”.
He also missed the cut at the Players Championship prior to the BMW PGA Championship.
When he was asked about changing his schedule for the upcoming weeks, he replied by saying that he does not plan any such thing in future.
However, he did change his mind and he has now a busy schedule ahead of him for the next three weeks.
According to his overall PGA Tour stats, McIlroy participated in six events so far this year and recorded a win along with two second-place and one third-place finish.
In addition to that, he also has two fifth-place finishes on the European Tour this year and claimed number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings thrice.
Yet, he needs a little extra focus, especially after missing the cut twice, if he really wants to make a good run in the US Open this year too.
