Rory McIlroy admits fulfillment of childhood dream by surging to the top of the world
There are but only few in the world who are able to achieve their ambitions as early as the age of 22. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is one of the handfuls of the fortunate players in the sport who surged to the top of the world and admitted that it had been his childhood ambition.
Reigning in a raging Tiger Woods, McIlroy walked to the summit of the leaderboard with his usual haughtiness and aplomb to land yet another title on the PGA Tour, The Honda Classic.
With this glittering victory, McIlroy has now surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in his short career and is only the youngest player in the world to achieve the landmark.
McIlroy said, "It's very special. When I was 10 or 11, I was interviewed and said I wanted to be the best player in the world and I wanted to win Majors".
He fulfilled the first part of his wish by winning the US Open at Congressional Country Club last year.
He led the tournament through all four days and finally landed the title by an eight-stroke lead and became the youngest player to do so after Bobby Jones.
He led the Masters for three consecutive days in April last year, only to succumb to mental vows on the final days, shooting an over-par 80.
For the moment, the young Irishman wants to stay on top of the OWGR for as long as can manage.
He added, “I'd like to stay there for a while. As long as I keep playing good golf and have chances to win tournaments, then hopefully I'll stay up there. I feel the way I'm playing at the minute, the level of consistency, hopefully I'm going to be able to stay there for a while”.
McIlroy brought an end to Luke Donald’s nine month unperturbed reign on top of the world and is hoping to consolidate his position by a few more strong finishes and possible victories to extend his reign.
McIlroy started the current season on a strong note, pulling in several high-profile finishes in Middle East and South Africa but remained luck-less till his victory at the Honda Classic on PGA.
