Rory McIlroy aiming to continue his run of being the best – Golf News
The Northern Ireland’s golfing superstar, Rory McIlroy is aiming to continue his run of good finishes in the upcoming events to remain atop the Official World Golf Rankings for a longer period of time.
He recently snatched the number one spot in the world from Luke Donald and is aiming to maintain his ranking.
McIlroy lost to Hunter Mahan in the final of the first World Golf Championship of the season, Accenture Match Play Championship, where he could have replaced Donald on the top spot.
Yet, he did not lose hope and entered the field of Honda Classic in the very next week to claim the victory in style to surge to the number one spot in the OWGR.
That was the time when he had to remain consistent, giving no chance to Lee Westwood, who had a chance to take his position with a win in the Cadillac Championship.
For this purpose, he again appeared in the second WGC event of the year and displayed an average game in the opening two days.
However, his charge in the final two rounds earned him the third place on the leaderboard, another top-five finish of the year.
Yet, he felt disappointed about his performance in the tournament because he felt that he could have done even better to stop the pace set by Justin Rose, who was two strokes ahead of him.
McIlroy was nine-under at the 12th hole on the third day of the event and he was looking to score a 59 at the end. However, he failed because of the two bogeys on the final five holes he played.
It was the best round of the day. Yet, he said that he never expected to experience such disappointment with a performance that should have made him happy.
"There's no room for complacency out here at all," McIlroy said after the final round.
He continued, "I know that every week's an opportunity to win, every week's an opportunity to play well, and even though I didn't play my best over the first couple of days, I fought back nicely at the weekend, and posted a couple of good numbers".
"There were no thoughts of me relaxing this week or thinking that my job's done. I know better than that, and I know I still have to keep working hard and giving it 100 percent," he added.
McIlroy is now getting ready to stun his opponents at the Masters Tournament, the first major event of the year, and prove to the world that he really is the next Tiger Woods in the sport of golf.
