Rory McIlroy aims high at the Jumeirah Golf Estates
Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland has expressed his wish of defending The Race to Dubai title, when he will play on the European Tour next season.
The 2012 golf season not only brought the world number one crown for McIlroy, but he also became the second player in the history of the sport to win the money lists on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour.
This week, he plans to add another title to his resume by winning the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
On Tuesday, the European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady presented McIlroy a tour badge engraved with "Defending Champion for 2013" next to his name.
After receiving the prestigious badge, he expressed his intentions to try to retain the badge at the end of the 2013 European Tour season.
“I think with the way golf has gone, you can be a global player and you can play all over the world,” he said. “I don't think anyone is going to neglect The European Tour”.
He added, “The European Tour gave me a lot of opportunities coming through, and it's something that I'll never forget and something that I'll always hold onto. I'm always going to be a European Tour Member”.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that the 2012 European Tour season was the best of his five-year professional career.
Therefore, he now plans to end his remarkable campaign on a high note by recording another victory at the Jumeirah Golf Estates.
“It's been a phenomenal year, I've still got one more tournament yet and I want to try to finish the season strong. This is definitely a great way to end what has been a great season,” he said.
According to the Golf commentators, McIlroy certainly has the potential to raise two trophies at the end of the week – one for winning the tournament and the other for his triumph in The Race to Dubai.
His past record in Dubai – he won the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009 – will also provide him advantage over his competitors, when he tees off this week at the DP World Tour Championship.
