Rory McIlroy aims to reclaim number one spot at the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy earned the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings following Luke Donald’s worsening performance in the RBC Heritage in April, 2012.
Before coming to play the event, McIlroy was enjoying his vacations back at home following his appearance in the Masters Tournament.
"Wish it was always that easy,'' he quipped after becoming the number one player for the second time.
Last week, the golf followers witnessed him go back to the second place in the same way.
He was still away from the course while Luke Donald recorded a third-place finish in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and jumped to the top of the world rankings.
He is now scheduled to participate in the Wells Fargo Championship, his first appearance since he displayed a disappointing performance in the Masters Tournament.
He finished tied for the 40th position, which was a shock for his fans and the commentators too.
Throughout the 2012 season, he did not finish out of the top-five places in any of the events he has played so far.
Therefore, it was a huge disappointment for him and he decided to take some weeks off in order to take some rest.
"Definitely wasn't the result that I wanted at the Masters,” McIlroy said. “I took a couple of weeks off back in Europe, spent some time with my girlfriend [tennis player Caroline Wozniacki], and I've come back to the States last week and did some really
good work in Florida with my coach, fitness coach, and really put in some good work. ... The game feels really good”.
According to McIlroy, he was not able to give his best in the Masters and there were several things to be worked on.
Therefore, a month away from the competitive events greatly helped him tweaking his game for maximum output.
“I feel like that's back on the right track, and I feel like I'm getting more comfortable with it and looking forward to getting back and playing some competitive golf this week,” he said.
Wells Fargo Championship is the same tournament that witnessed him earn the first ever professional title of his career.
Therefore, he is confident to return to form and reclaim the top position in a more respectable way, like he did after a win in the Honda Classic.
