Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood optimistic for future major events
Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood, one of the leading golfers in the world, returned from Royal Lytham & St Annes with some of the worst memories of their careers.
Both the players listed way down the leaderboard, at the end of the tournament on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
Westwood recorded a two-over par 72 for a six-over par tournament score and shared the 45th spot. McIlroy, on the other hand, had to face an even worse defeat, as he finished tied for the 60th position after an eight-over par overall score.
According to McIlroy, he definitely has what it takes to be a major winner once again. Last year, he won the US Open with a record margin of eight strokes. Generally, US Open is known as the toughest major because of the selection of the courses each year.
However, McIlroy shattered the field last year with a 16-under par score. Therefore, he believes that he can repeat the same at any time in future. The only need is to play well during all the four rounds of any major event.
"I feel like I can win any given week if I play well," he said. "I don't think there is a major that is harder to win than any other. I think they are all equal. ...You've just got to beat all the other guys. I treat all the majors equally and try to do
my best”.
On the other hand, Westwood has now spent 59 major championships without a win. Some people may think that his great career is coming to end without a major title on his resume.
Westwood thinks otherwise. He will return to the field of The Open Championship next year with an age of 40 years on his passport. "That's when life begins, so I'm told," he said.
Westwood will also move to the United States at the end of this year along with his family. When asked about the reason behind his relocation, he told that the weather conditions do not suit him and his fitness level.
"The English winter," he said, "and the English summers. I struggled over there for a while but I've really enjoyed it in recent years".
