The lanky German had won three of the four events in Abu Dhabi and was the favourite player on the field. The 27-year-old will be happy to at least make the cut in the star-studded gala.
Kaymer spoke of his sad departure from the Abu Dhabi event and blamed his short game for it.
He said, “Obviously in Abu Dhabi the expectations were very high. I've been very successful there, and I didn't really start off the way I wanted, but last week in Qatar was a lot better. I had a lot of chances, especially on the weekend. It could have been a lot better result in the end. It's just a matter of time that I will score very good scores again, so I just need to wait”.
Kaymer started off his day with three birdies on the back nine. He made the turn, avoiding any unforeseen bogeys and pulled in another birdie on the front.
He dropped just one shot at par-three, 4th but shot back to form with a blistering eagle at par-three, 7th.
Kaymer also remained composed on the opening day of the event, carding a strong six-under, 66.
McIlroy and Kaymer are now head-on in the event and are hoping to outperform each other in the rest of the rounds over the weekend.
McIlroy said, "I just kept picking up birdies along the way and it puts me in a great position. I feel a lot more confident than I did in Abu Dhabi".
South African George Coetzee is not letting go of his struggle to bag his maiden European Tour title and played brilliantly on the second day, carding a round of six-under, 66.
Young Coetzee has been looking for a breakthrough for a considerably long time and has performed well in both the European Tour opening events in South Africa.
Starting off from the back nine, Coetzee pulled in a surprise eagle on par-five, 10th, his first hole of the day, sending a tough signal to the rest of the contenders.
He carded another two birdies through the back nine before making the turn and another two consecutive birdies on the opening holes on the front.
