Rory McIlroy back to No.1 spot in world golf rankings
Northern Irish Rory McIlroy has once again regained the world No.1 spot, snatching the position from the Englishman Luke Donald.
McIlroy was playing at the Wells Fargo Championship, a PGA Tour event. He reached the top of the leaderboard after scoring a 14-under 274.
His scored was atched by the two other professionals, Rickie Fowler and D.A. Points. Due to the first position tie, the game entered into a playoff mode. Fowler made an early birdie on the very first hole of the playoff and won the title.
McIlroy and Points tied for the second position at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 23-year-old Northern Irishman shot 23 birdies throughout the four rounds. He made 40 pars and carded 9 bogeys in total.
“He played to win. He deserved it after that birdie,” McIlroy praised Fowler.
He displayed an amazing performance in South Carolina and competed well for the title. His impressive score and amazing strokes helped him regain the leading position once again. He is now happier than ever before and aiming to maintain the position.
"That's nice. It's a little consolation," McIlroy said. "I would rather win the tournament, but yeah, it's good. I want to try and play well for the next few weeks and try and solidify my spot there at number one and hopefully start by doing that next week
and giving myself another chance to win".
In February 2012, he played at the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship and finished on the second spot. He was close to the number one world ranking position but failed to earn the top spot.
Later, McIlroy claimed the number 1 position after winning the Honda Classic in April, 2012. He scored a 12-under 268 there and defeated Donald on the ranking charts.
Donald then won back his ranking position by securing a win at the Transitions Championship in March. Both the professionals are competing against each other for domination in the golf world.
Donald has to show some more wins in the current year to regain his lost glory. Whereas, McIlroy should also perform well throughout the year, as he desire to maintain his position in the world golf rankings.
